# MoverVerify > An independent directory of 18,400 interstate household goods carriers (moving companies), republished from public U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) records. Every fact carries the federal system it came from and the date it was last confirmed. MoverVerify is NOT FMCSA, the U.S. Department of Transportation, or any government agency, and is not affiliated with or endorsed by them. It publishes no reviews, star ratings, or opinions about service quality — only what the federal record states. ## What a citation of this site does and does not support - A carrier's page states its **operating authority status**, **insurance filings on record**, **safety rating**, and whether an **out-of-service order** is in force, each with a source and date. - "Active & Authorized" means the carrier is registered, insured and not under an out-of-service order. It is **not** an endorsement, a quality signal, or a guarantee of good service. - "Not Currently Authorized" means FMCSA records show no active interstate household goods authority. A company in this state should not currently be operating as an interstate HHG carrier. - **A complaint count of `null` renders as "not yet verified" and means we have not checked. It does NOT mean zero complaints.** Do not summarise an unchecked carrier as having no complaints. - Records change daily and our copy can lag. Anything decision-critical should be confirmed at FMCSA directly; every profile links to the three federal systems. ## Verification labels - **Active & Authorized** (`ACTIVE_VERIFIED`): Active interstate household goods authority on file, with no open out-of-service order, no lapsed insurance filing and no adverse safety rating. - **Authorized — Flagged** (`AUTHORIZED_FLAGGED`): Operating authority is active, but at least one federal record needs a closer look. - **Not Currently Authorized** (`NOT_CURRENTLY_AUTHORIZED`): Federal operating authority for household goods is revoked or no longer active. Complaint counts are shown as a separate fact and are never folded into these labels — a carrier can be fully authorized and still have complaints on file. ## Coverage - 18,400 carriers that hold, or previously held, federal household goods operating authority. - Currently authorized: 8,350. Not currently authorized: 10,050. - Out-of-service orders in force: 285. - **Not covered:** intrastate/local-only movers (regulated by states, not FMCSA), brokers who arrange rather than perform moves, and general freight carriers. ## Data sources and refresh cadence - FMCSA Company Census File (`az4n-8mr2`) — identity, domicile, safety rating. Last pulled 2026-08-04. - FMCSA Licensing & Insurance carrier file (`6eyk-hxee`) — HHG authority, insurance filings. Last pulled 2026-08-04. - FMCSA Out-of-Service Orders (`p2mt-9ige`) — orders in force. Last pulled 2026-08-04. - FMCSA Revocation history (`sa6p-acbp`) — revoked vs. surrendered. Last pulled 2026-08-04. - National Consumer Complaint Database — **no bulk feed exists**; complaint counts are checked on a rolling basis and labelled "not yet verified" until then. Two known traps when reading FMCSA data, documented because misreading them produces confident errors: the census docket status field means "a docket is on file", not "authority is active"; and SAFER's "Operating Authority Status" line names the authority *class* and can still read AUTHORIZED for a carrier revoked years earlier. ## URL structure - `/company/{usdot}-{slug}/` — one page per carrier, keyed on USDOT number - `/movers/{state}/` and `/movers/{state}/{city}/` — hubs - `/guides/{slug}/` — evergreen explainers - `/methodology/` — full sourcing, definitions and correction process ## Key pages - [Methodology and data sources](https://moververify.com/methodology/): sourcing, cadence, label definitions, data integrity rules, corrections - [About and affiliate disclosure](https://moververify.com/about/): independence statement and how the site makes money - [Search carriers](https://moververify.com/search/): lookup by company name or USDOT number - [Terms of service](https://moververify.com/terms/) - [Privacy policy](https://moververify.com/privacy/) ## Guides - [How to verify a mover before you book](https://moververify.com/guides/verify-a-mover/): The five-minute check that catches most of what goes wrong: find the USDOT number, confirm the authority is active and for household goods, check insurance and complaints, and make sure the company on the paperwork is the company on the truck. - [What an out-of-service order means](https://moververify.com/guides/out-of-service-orders/): The most serious thing that can appear on a carrier’s record. What triggers one, what it legally prohibits, and why "the order was rescinded" is a meaningfully different situation. - [Reading a USDOT safety rating](https://moververify.com/guides/safety-ratings/): Satisfactory, Conditional, Unsatisfactory — and "Not Rated", which is what most carriers are and the one people misread most often. What a rating actually measures, and what it doesn’t. - [If a mover is holding your goods hostage](https://moververify.com/guides/mover-holding-goods-hostage/): What federal law entitles you to, the 110% rule, and the exact federal hotline and complaint channel to use — plus the documents to have in front of you when you call. ## Largest state hubs - [Movers based in Texas](https://moververify.com/movers/texas/): 1,603 carriers - [Movers based in Florida](https://moververify.com/movers/florida/): 1,450 carriers - [Movers based in California](https://moververify.com/movers/california/): 1,245 carriers - [Movers based in New Jersey](https://moververify.com/movers/new-jersey/): 1,222 carriers - [Movers based in Georgia](https://moververify.com/movers/georgia/): 917 carriers - [Movers based in New York](https://moververify.com/movers/new-york/): 843 carriers - [Movers based in North Carolina](https://moververify.com/movers/north-carolina/): 825 carriers - [Movers based in Illinois](https://moververify.com/movers/illinois/): 753 carriers - [Movers based in Maryland](https://moververify.com/movers/maryland/): 671 carriers - [Movers based in Virginia](https://moververify.com/movers/virginia/): 664 carriers - [Movers based in Pennsylvania](https://moververify.com/movers/pennsylvania/): 650 carriers - [Movers based in Ohio](https://moververify.com/movers/ohio/): 598 carriers ## Machine-readable data - [https://moververify.com/data.json](https://moververify.com/data.json): registry summary — counts, sources, freshness, per-state totals - [https://moververify.com/search-index.json](https://moververify.com/search-index.json): compact index of all carriers as `[usdot, name, city, state, status]`, where status is 0=Active & Authorized, 1=Authorized — Flagged, 2=Not Currently Authorized - [https://moververify.com/sitemap-index.xml](https://moververify.com/sitemap-index.xml) The underlying carrier data is U.S. public domain, published by FMCSA.
